ASHTANGA VINYASA YOGA
The “Mysore” style of yoga practice is a particular way of teaching within the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga tradition, as was taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the southern Indian city of Mysore. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a flowing, therapeutic yoga style combining breath and postures (vinyasa), in order to focus the mind and bring about radiant health to the body and being.
MYSORE YOGA: Monday – Friday | 7 AM*
PRIMARY SERIES: Sunday | 8:30 AM*
*No class on full moon and new moon days.
Ashtanga Yoga is suitable for ALL levels of yoga practitioners, from beginners and students healing specific injuries/illnesses, to the more experienced yoga practitioner. You will see all ages and abilities practicing together in the Mysore room, and the system is set up to address individual needs and approaches to yoga within several set series or sequences of postures & breathing techniques. Everyone starts in what’s called the “Primary Series” which includes 3-5 sun salutations A & B, standing postures, sitting postures and finishing postures with focused breath. Once this sequence is learned and practiced for some time, the student progresses through 2nd series and onward, if appropriate, focusing on different areas of the body in each posture sequence. There is a gradual increase in depth and challenge with each series. The sequencing is an ancient science that was created and refined by the lineage in India that has brought much of what we call “yoga” today to the west, and especially what we now call “vinyasa” yoga, originating from Sri T. Krishnamacharya .
The “Mysore Style” of yoga class allows each student to develop their own practice in a group setting & energy following sequential groupings of postures. Student’s are “led” through the postures by the teacher until they memorize their particular practice sequence. After which, more advanced postures are added, and verbal as well as hands on assistance is given to allow a student to go deeper in the practice of opening their bodies and minds. The advantage of learning one’s own practice is a depth of focus and empowerment in the practice of yoga. Benefits of this particular style are learning to cultivate the quiet, meditative aspects of practice, as well as the self-exploration of body and mind that arises from the unique inward focus. One can truly learn to “listen within” in practice to the place that is expansive and full of our own wisdom and insight. It’s also a chance to find and follow one’s own rhythm of movement and breath.
When entering the Mysore room there will be students of varying levels practicing the different postures along with the focused breathing. The teacher will be walking around assisting and verbally leading especially newer students, as well as adjusting and adding ideas and inquiry to the practices of more advanced students. If you are new to ashtanga yoga and this “Mysore” style, please feel welcome to just come in to take class without any prior knowledge or memorization of the sequences. You’ll be verbally led and guided from the very first sun salutation on.
Although the schedule says 7:00am-9:00am for the Mysore class, students will come in to start at different times based on their length of practice sequence. If you are new to ashtanga yoga or this is your first time to Mysore style class, please arrive to class between 7:00am & 7:45am, unless prior arrangements are made for a later time.
If you are interested in learning more about “Mysore Style”, please feel free to contact us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also stop by and observe a morning Mysore class session for free or drop in on Sunday’s led “Primary series” ashtanga yoga class, where the 1st sequence is verbally led and counted as the class moves together in vinyasa unison.
Mysore classes are held between 7:00am and 9:00am weekdays Monday though Friday. The Led Primary Series for ashtanga is offered on Sunday mornings from 8:30-10am. There is no class on new and full moon mornings, so please check the schedule here for these days off. Moon days are traditional days of rest from asana (posture) practice in this tradition.

ASHTANGA CLASS SCHEDULE
MYSORE YOGA: Monday – Friday | 7 AM*
PRIMARY SERIES: Sunday | 8:30 AM*
*No class on full moon and new moon days: Monday, April 10; Tuesday, April 25; Wednesday, May 10; Thursday, May 25.
Ashtanga Yoga as taught by K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India is the origin for the “vinyasa” style of yoga. The active, moving sequence of postures is lead by an awareness of the breath and specific focus points to stabilize the body & mind for life ease and deeper states of meditation. * The “Mysore” style is a teacher-guided class in this active vinyasa style of yoga, the student is not “on their own”, as is often misunderstood. The student is taught the sequence verbally and given individual tips & hands on help in a group setting. A student can then tune into deeper awareness of patterns of body and mind for their benefit and comfort in the practice. Mysore style is very good for new students to yoga or the ashtanga style because of this individual pacing.
