I first discovered yoga as a young girl growing up in Connecticut by watching my mother practicing in our living room in the midst of the chaos and confusion of our big family. Although I was intrigued by what allowed my mother to drop into the practice, I had no idea that this system would later in life provide tremendous healing and support despite a tumultuous upbringing filled with alcoholism and abuse. It’s not an overstatement to say that yoga saved my life.

I left my house the day after my senior year of high school to begin a journey of self-discovery and transformation. I surrendered to this ancient science of Yoga and embraced the life of a spiritual seeker that led me to the Bay Area, then Boulder and finally India to learn from Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. My journey inward allowed me to find the internal resources I needed to connect me to my breath, the ultimate tool to unite my body, mind and spirit. It is said that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. I have been blessed to learn from Richard Freeman, Gabriel Halpern and Rusty Wells. These days, however, it’s my husband, two boys and menagerie of animals who mirror to me daily that the real work is staying in my heart no matter what.

After teaching for 20 years, I still step onto my mat daily with a beginner’s mind and compassionate curiosity. My practice invites me to return to a beginner’s mind again and again and reminds me that compassion begins with myself. It is in the simple, yet challenging, invitation to stay in the present moment that has gifted me 30 years of sobriety and into the role of mother, wife and yoga teacher. This is a teaching that I will hopefully remember as I embark on my first 100 mile mountain bike race this summer and continue to learn how to play the harmonium. It is an honor and privilege that I am able to show up, serve and share my love of yoga with my students here in Bend.
